Signs and management of polycystic ovary syndrome

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCO) is hormonal imbalance affects women and causes the following signs:

  1. Amenorrhea or irregular menstrual cycles due to increased levels of androgen (male hormone).
  2. Appearance of male secondary sexual characters such as hirsutism and abnormal facial hair due to increased levels of androgen.
  3. Weight gain.
  4. Infertility.
  5. Acne.
  6. U/S examination shows multiple small cysts in the ovaries (necklace appearance).
  7. Increased risk of diabetes or high levels of blood cholesterol.

Unfortunately, there is no absolute treatment for polycystic ovary syndrome; it's persistent chronic condition. So the available measures aim to minimize the impact and to manage the complications, especially weight gain and infertility. It's advised to do the following:

  • Control body weight: you should follow diet plan and do some exercise regularly. Weight loss helps in managing other complications such as diabetes and infertility.
  • Control insulin: patients of PCO usually suffer from insulin resistance which predispose to diabetes. Doctors usually prescribe metformin to control both insulin resistance/sensitivity and obesity.
  • Infertility management: most PCO cases complain inability to conceive despite of regular sexual intercourse. This issue is due to inovulation, Clomiphen Citrate (Clomid) or letrozole (Femara) are the drugs of choice for induction of ovulation. If there is no proper response to these drugs, ovarian drilling will be helpful in improvement of ovarian functions.
  • Hormonal replacement therapy: oral contraceptive drugs are used to regulate the menstrual cycle and promote the hormonal balance of the body.
