Occasion eye swelling or puffiness is very common with fatigue or lack of sleep; but when eye puffiness lasts more than 48 hours, it could be due to medical problem that may damage your eyes or affects them badly. So we will highlight the common causes of eye puffiness.

  1. Allergy: being allergic to certain allergen (such as foods or chemicals) triggers allergic reactions which may be manifested with eye puffiness.
  2. Conjunctivitis: it's viral or bacterial infection of conjunctiva and is very common in winter to cause eye redness and puffiness.
  3. Orbital cellulitis: it's an inflammation of the sinuses which extends to the orbital region, causing redness and painful swelling of the eye lid.
  4. Chalazion: it develops due to obstruction of the canal of the seborrheal glands in the eye lid, accumulation of fatty secretions causes chalazion and puffy eyes.
  5. Graves' disease: it is eye problem related to thyroid gland dysfunction. This condition is autoimmune disease and causes eye inflammation and puffiness.
  6. Direct trauma to the eye; as in accidents and violent sports (boxing)
  7. Eye tumors: it's relatively rare; eye puffiness is usually accompanied with blurred vision or loss vision.

Finally, if eye puffiness lasts more than 48 hours or accompanied with one of the following signs, you should seek urgent medical consultation, as it may indicate serious problem. These warning signs include the following:

  • Blurred vision.
  • Rapid deterioration of visual acuity.
  • Eye floaters.
  • Sudden foreign body sensation.
  • Stabbing pain in the eye.
