How does COVID-19 affect our body?

The classic clinical picture of COVID-19 consists mainly of the triad; fever, fatigue and dry cough. In severe cases of COVID-19, the lung is usually affected by leakage of fluids from adjacent blood capillaries into the lung alveoli, the collection of fluids in lung alveoli leads to respiratory failure which is life-threatening condition.

Based on the above, we can say that the lungs are the main organs affected by COVID-19, but in severe advanced cases multiple organs are affected too.

Despite COVID-19 seems to enter the body through the lungs; recent medical studies showed that the intestine could be an additional route for COVID-19, which explains why stool sample of some cases of COVID-19 have shown positive results for COVID-19 test. So when COVID-19 reaches the intestine, the patient may experience GIT symptoms such as; nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

COVID-19 can affect the heart and blood vessels too, which is manifested by mild hypotension and cardiac arrhythmia. On the other side, COVID-19 may be responsible for hepatic and renal failures which are manifested by elevated liver enzymes as well as increased levels of urea and creatinine.
